No one can deny the impact social media has had in recent years, you could even argue that social media has had the largest impact on the fashion industry. Whether it be by advertisements and promotions or whether it be one of the newer social media creations like influencers. Influencers are individuals with large social media followings, especially on Instagram, who post about their daily life occasionally peppering in sponsored posts about various different products they use. These influencers are in an interesting position, these platforms were originally used for genuine connections but somewhere along the line things changed, people were able to generate revenue through one or several social media platforms. So, we end up with somewhat of an impression of authenticity from these influencers when in reality they are being paid to wear certain clothes or to talk about certain products. Keeping all of that in mind it’s still possible to find genuine influencers who are spreading a more positive, less contrived message.
Now if by this point you’ve wondered what does this have to do with sustainability? Well with this new age of social media there are many people who attempt to use their platform to spread awareness to their viewers and one such influencer Jenny Welbourn is the focus of today’s article. I first found Jenny on YouTube where she’s better known as Wear I Live, immediately I could tell that Jenny was different from your typical YouTuber as she was genuine and her channel had a focus on sustainable fashion. Jenny’s YouTube channel and blog also called Wear I Live, document Jenny’s life in New York and how she strives to be more eco-friendly each day. She has videos documenting her outfits of the week, her monthly favourites, and hauls, content that’s typical of a lifestyle blogger but differs in that Jenny mostly features sustainable brands. My favourite videos of hers though are her thrifting hauls, I always find it so interesting to see the unique pieces found by another person.
If possible, more remarkable than her eco-friendly ethos is her sense of style, anyone who can dress like an eccentric grandmother while still managing to keep up with trends has a real talent. One look at her Instagram will tell you she loves colours and everything related to nature, you can also see her eclectic style reflected through how she decorates her apartment. Another amazing part of her channel is how she talks a lot about sustainability in other aspects of life like home décor, dishware, health and beauty products, it’s surprising what brands are creating through sustainable practices and following an influencer like Jenny is an amazing way at keeping up with the top eco-friendly brands or any new developments within the sustainable fashion movement.
Another aspect to Jenny’s channel is her openness to discussing mental health and her own personal experiences which is, in my opinion, one of the best things an influencer can advocate on their channel, it encourages a dialogue to start between herself and her viewers while also promoting her viewers to be more mindful in their own lives.
At almost 100k followers on Instagram and 237k YouTube subscribers Jenny is one to watch as fashion moves into a new age of sustainability, take a look at her various social media platforms to check out how Jenny makes the world a bit greener.
