What a time to be alive. How else can I say it? 2020 was already off to a rough start when Covid-19 began to affect the globe. We are 4 months into social distancing and the ever-prevalent issues of police brutality and especially racism against the Black Community have been brought to the surface (once again) after the deaths of multiple black individuals within the last few weeks. While the Corona Virus has killed large numbers of people, it’s hard not to think that racism is an even more deadly virus that has been killing black people for the last several hundred years.
We’re not saying that all lives don’t matter, or that one life is more valuable than the other; what we’re doing is focusing on CURRENT events. This particular time of injustice directly and openly happened to BLACK individuals; so while the statement “all lives matter” is true, we must all recognize that the issues at hand call for our attention, anger, empathy, and voices to be united so that everyone can understand the true meaning and power of #BlackLivesMatter.
This is where we must come together as a community to look deep into our hearts and acknowledge the privilege each of us have (whether you’re white [especially] or a non-black person of colour) that allows us to raise awareness and educate the peers that may not see what’s happening as clearly.
There was a big debate going on in my head about whether I should write this article or not; it doesn’t fall into the categories of fashion or beauty, but as the PR Manager of Infuse Magazine I felt the need to use our platform to speak about it and show our stance on this issue, regardless of how big or small we might be.
