I once saw one of my favourite Toronto influencers, @biancavenerayan post a poll on her Instagram asking her followers whether wearing all black was considered to be fashion or a cop out. I quickly pressed “fashion” because I’m an avid wearer of the colour myself. I was surprised to see that more people than I expected had chosen “cop out”.
I decided to post the same poll on my own account. I was a little nervous about how I was going to feel if the majority of my followers voted “cop out”, considering I ALWAYS wear black, but I decided to do it anyway. As I waited a few hours for the results, I got to thinking: IS it a cop out? When I sit and think about it, I guess I do see how it could be. After all, black looks good on pretty much anyone. Yet not everyone would necessarily look as stylish in any other colour.
I’ll admit, my all black wardrobe started as more of a security thing, but eventually I just started to be known as The Girl Who Wears All Black. Now, with less insecurity, I still continue to rock a mostly-black wardrobe. My opinion on this debate is that it depends on the person wearing the clothes and how the fits are being styled. Sure, anyone can wear a black sweater with tights, but what are you doing to spice it up? My favourite thing to add to an otherwise plain black outfit is (p)leather detailing. Whether it be a motto jacket or a pair of leather tights, it always adds a little colour to the look without actually adding any colour.
Here, I’m wearing a basic chunky, black turtleneck with a little bit of my pleather skirt peeking through, paired with some thigh-high boots. The boot and skirt combo gives it a cute edge and lets the little bag pop.
Final verdict: all black everything is fashion.
These opinions are my own and are not meant for strong, opposing opinions to come for me.
