Often when we are first introduced to sustainability and how it relates to fashion our first instinct is to head to a thrift store but it’s important not to close your mind to the idea of brands that produce new clothes sustainably. If eco-friendly fashion is an interest to you it’s important to stay connected to the various brands working towards a more sustainable fashion future there’s a lot more brands out there than you may expect, which is why I’m taking it upon myself to introduce you to one of the biggest players in sustainable fashion, Everlane.
Everlane is a brand that was created in 2010 by Michael Preysman and Jesse Farmer, the two set out to create a brand that was as transparent as possible. The brand focuses on developing more sustainable fabrics as well as producing their garments in ethical factories, they even go as far as providing a link on the page of a product to see the exact factory where it was made. This level of transparency has set a new standard in the fashion industry, Everlane has also made strides in making more eco-friendly textiles. If you look at the fabric content for a particular product on their website Everlane breaks down the exact percentage of what the item is made of , their ReKnit line of shoes is made of 88% recycled polyester, Everlane’s sneaker brand Tread seeks to make the world’s lowest impact sneaker with a 94.2% virgin-plastic-free sole and leather from the cleanest tannery in the world. Everlane actually even pushed back the release date of their denim until they found the most sustainable factory possible. Everlane’s commitment to creating the best fashion future is clear through all they’ve accomplished already but they don’t plan on stopping there, by 2021 Everlane plans on discontinuing their use of virgin-plastic in all garments as well as packaging.
